Premier League CEO Breaks Silence After Landmark Manchester City Case Decision
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has welcomed the independent Commission’s decision in the long-running disciplinary case involving Manchester City, describing the matter as one of the most significant in the competition’s history.
Masters said the Commission’s decision established findings concerning Manchester City’s conduct and supported the Premier League’s decision to pursue the case.
“The core decision establishes the facts of what happened at Manchester City. It details how the club systematically broke Premier League Rules for nearly a decade,” Masters said.
He added that the lengthy process had been difficult, but insisted that the league remained committed to having the allegations examined independently.
“It also vindicates the Premier League’s decision to pursue this case against Manchester City. While this process to date has been both long and difficult, the PL has remained determined that the facts be established independently,” he said.
According to Masters, enforcing the Premier League’s rules is essential to maintaining a fair and competitive competition for all participating clubs and supporters.
“It is a key responsibility of the Premier League to ensure that the Rules, approved by the clubs themselves, are upheld to protect the integrity of the competition. It is paramount that the League remains competitive and fair for all clubs and for the fans. We take that role extremely seriously,” he said.
Masters described the disciplinary proceedings and the Commission’s decision as “the most significant in Premier League history.”
However, the case has not yet reached its final stage. Masters confirmed that important matters remain outstanding, including the potential sanction that could follow the Commission’s findings.
“There are elements of the case that remain to be decided, including, importantly, what sanction must follow next,” he said.
The Premier League now says it intends to move quickly through the remaining stages of the process, with the aim of providing greater certainty for clubs, supporters and the competition as a whole.
“Now we’ve the Commission’s decision, we are committed to moving swiftly through the remainder of the process soon to provide certainty for the League, our clubs and fans,” Masters said.
