Orlando Pirates Will Seek a Fifth Straight MTN8 Trophy as They Face Sundowns in October
The 2026 MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 10 October, with kick-off confirmed for 18:00.
Pirates will head into the final as the defending champions and are chasing a fifth consecutive MTN8 title, having won the competition in each of the previous four seasons. Their 2025 triumph over Stellenbosch took their MTN8 title tally to 14.
The Buccaneers also have a strong record against Sundowns in this competition. According to the Premier Soccer League, the two clubs have met 14 times in the MTN8, including two previous finals. Pirates won the most recent final meeting between the sides, defeating Sundowns 2–1 in the 2023 final.
Sundowns, meanwhile, have won the MTN8 four times, with their most recent triumph coming in 2021. They reached this year’s final after overcoming Golden Arrows on the away-goals rule following a 3–3 aggregate draw.
Pirates booked their place in the final after defeating Sekhukhune United 4–0 on aggregate in the semi-finals.
The two sides have also made strong starts to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign. Pirates are currently second with 19 points from seven matches, having won six games, while Sundowns sit top with 20 points from eight matches, remaining unbeaten with six wins and two draws. Pirates have won their last four league matches, including a 2–0 victory over Marumo Gallants on 20 September.
The stage is now set for another meeting between two of South Africa’s most successful clubs, with Pirates looking to extend their remarkable run in the competition and Sundowns aiming to add another MTN8 trophy to their collection.
