Portugal Faces FIFA Ban Risk Over Political Interference in Ronaldo-Jesus Dispute

Portugal could face FIFA sanctions if political involvement in the dispute between Cristiano Ronaldo and national team coach Jorge Jesus is found to have crossed the line into interference with the country’s football administration.

The issue emerged after Ronaldo abruptly left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen last week following tensions with Jesus and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president Pedro Proença.

According to a report by Goal published on October 3, Portuguese politicians were reportedly involved in attempts to help resolve the dispute between Ronaldo and Jesus. The report raised concerns over FIFA’s rules requiring national football associations to operate independently and without interference from governments or other third parties.

The concern is based on FIFA’s longstanding position that football associations must be allowed to manage their affairs independently. Political interference has previously resulted in national associations being suspended from international football.

One example is Albania, whose football association was suspended by FIFA in 2008 over what the governing body described as serious political interference. During the suspension, Albanian teams were prevented from participating in official and friendly international matches, while the country was also excluded from UEFA activities.

Reports from Spain have also suggested that Portugal’s political leadership became involved as the Ronaldo-Jesus dispute escalated. Cadena SER reported that Prime Minister Luís Montenegro made calls to Ronaldo, Jesus and FPF president Proença in an effort to mediate the situation.

The Ronaldo controversy began after Jesus decided not to start the 41-year-old captain against Norway. Ronaldo subsequently left the national team camp before Portugal’s Nations League match against Denmark.

Reuters reported that Jesus and Proença even travelled to Copenhagen airport in an unsuccessful attempt to convince Ronaldo to remain with the squad. Ronaldo later said he would explain his reasons for leaving at a later stage.

However, there is currently no confirmation that FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Portugal or that the Portuguese Football Federation is facing an imminent suspension.

Goal also reported that a suspension does not currently appear to be on the cards, provided the FPF continues to operate independently. The situation could become more serious if political involvement goes beyond attempts to mediate between Ronaldo and Jesus and begins influencing football administration or decision-making.

For now, Portugal remain active in international competition, with the national team preparing for their upcoming Nations League fixtures while the Ronaldo situation continues to attract attention both inside and outside the country.
