Botswana Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe has called on African leaders and communicators to embrace authentic leadership, saying character, humility and integrity are the foundation of meaningful communication.

Speaking at the official opening of the Effective Communicators Conference in Swakopmund, Gaolathe said communication should never be driven by appearances or the pursuit of attention, but by purpose and values.

“In purpose, it is never triumphalist in victory, nor does it surrender to despair when the weather turns against it,” he said.

Gaolathe noted that while public attention can be manufactured, trust, credibility and legacy must be earned through consistent actions and strong character.

He pointed to influential leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Namibia’s Founding President, Dr. Sam Nujoma, saying their words continue to inspire generations because they lived according to the values they preached.

“Character is communication,” Gaolathe said, adding that humility does not advertise itself and integrity does not need constant public declarations because people’s actions eventually speak louder than their words.

Turning to Africa’s development, the Botswana Vice President said the continent has recorded many achievements but has often faced a shortage of authentic leadership. He encouraged Africans to tell their own story with discipline, dignity and confidence, highlighting both the continent’s accomplishments and its ambitions for the future.

Gaolathe also called for greater unity across Africa, describing the continent as one family in which every nation has unique strengths to contribute.

“Africa is a family, and every nation is a sibling with something distinctive to offer,” he said, adding that qualities such as enterprise, righteousness, scholarship and endurance found across African nations can help build a stronger and more prosperous continent.
