New CRAN board urged to accelerate Namibia’s digital transformation

Information and Communication Technology Minister Emma Theofelus has called on the newly appointed board of the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) to accelerate efforts aimed at building a digitally driven economy.
During a meeting with the new board, led by chairperson Elwis Nashilongo, Theofelus stressed the need for a regulatory environment that can keep pace with rapid technological changes while ensuring that consumers remain protected. She said CRAN’s role would be critical in balancing digital innovation with effective oversight as Namibia continues to expand its digital infrastructure and services.
Theofelus further revealed that government is in the process of finalising the Cybercrime Bill and the Data Protection Bill, which are expected to strengthen online security, address digital related offences and provide greater protection for citizens personal information.
The new CRAN leadership has identified the digital transformation of the regulator itself as a key priority, with plans to improve efficiency and modernise its operations to better support Namibia’s economic development.
The board’s appointment comes at a time when the country is pushing for increased digital inclusion, improved connectivity and stronger safeguards within the growing digital economy.
