African Stars Football Club have appointed experienced Namibian coach Gerald Günther as their new head coach as the club prepares for the upcoming Premier League season and a crucial CAF Champions League meeting with Orlando Pirates.

Günther takes over after a sudden change in the club’s coaching department, with African Stars needing to quickly prepare for their continental campaign.

The experienced coach returns to the top level of Namibian football after previously working with several clubs, including Eleven Arrows, Blue Waters and Blue Boys. He has also been involved with Namibia’s youth national teams, including the U20 and U17 sides.

Günther has a CAF A Licence, one of the highest coaching qualifications in African football. His coaching background also includes international exposure through his involvement with Namibia’s youth teams.

One of his notable assignments came with the Young Warriors at the 2017 COSAFA U20 Championship in Zambia. Namibia opened the tournament with a 1–0 victory over Angola under Günther before suffering a 2–1 defeat to Lesotho.

At club level, Günther has also managed teams in the Namibian top-flight environment and was previously described as the head coach of coastal side Civics, where he spoke about developing a squad with young players and potential.

His appointment now places him in charge of African Stars at an important stage of the season, with the club facing both domestic competition and a major continental challenge against Orlando Pirates.
