Portugal Provisionally Suspends Cristiano Ronaldo As Disciplinary Case Opens
Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after the governing body opened disciplinary proceedings against the national team captain over his departure from the squad’s training camp.
In a statement issued on Saturday, 10 October 2026, the FPF confirmed that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated following an incident reported on 7 October. The case has been referred to the federation’s Disciplinary Investigation Committee and has been classified as urgent.
The 41-year-old forward left Portugal’s camp following tensions surrounding his role in the team under coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo had been an unused substitute in Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway, despite warming up during the match.
Ronaldo later issued a public statement apologising to his teammates and supporters for leaving the camp. He also acknowledged that his actions warranted disciplinary consequences, stressing that his position as captain made the situation more serious.
The FPF has now imposed an additional provisional suspension while the investigation continues. However, the final disciplinary decision, including the length of any potential ban, has not yet been announced.
Under the federation’s disciplinary regulations, leaving the national team without justification can carry a suspension of between one and six months, alongside a possible fine. The final outcome will depend on the disciplinary process.
Despite the controversy, Ronaldo has indicated that he remains willing to represent Portugal after serving any punishment imposed by the federation.
