Zimbabwe Becomes Latest African Nation to Report Citizens Tricked Into Russia–Ukraine War

Zimbabwean authorities have confirmed that several of their citizens have died while fighting in Russia’s war in Ukraine, after being misled by recruitment networks that promised well-paying jobs abroad. The announcement adds to growing concern across Africa, as more countries report similar cases involving their nationals.
Information Minister Soda Zhemu said on Wednesday that 15 Zimbabweans were killed on the frontlines after being lured to Russia through social media advertisements posted by agents offering employment opportunities. According to the minister, the situation does not involve lawful military enlistment but rather what he described as a coordinated system of deception and human trafficking.
Zhemu explained that more than 60 Zimbabwean citizens are believed to still be in active combat zones, and the government is currently engaging Russian authorities to facilitate the return of those still alive, as well as the repatriation of the bodies of those who died.
This marks the first official confirmation by the government in Harare that dozens of Zimbabwean nationals have been recruited into Russian military operations linked to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Reports from Ukrainian officials last month indicated that over 1,780 individuals from 36 African countries had been identified fighting alongside Russian forces. However, research published earlier this year by the French Institute of International Relations suggested that the actual figure could be closer to 4,000.
Although the exact numbers remain uncertain, estimates indicate that hundreds of African recruits may have lost their lives since the war began, raising concerns about the growing use of foreign fighters recruited through misleading promises of employment.
