Peace Talks Ease Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA) Tensions
By Anton WokieThe two disputing factions within the Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA) have taken a major step toward reconciliation after formally establishing negotiation delegations aimed at resolving the long-standing leadership dispute and restoring unity within the Ovaherero community.
This follows the release of a joint media statement issued on Thursday, 07 May 2026, confirming that the respective negotiating teams are being led by Chief Janee Mujahere of Otjimbingwe and Chief Boas Tjingaete of Otjombinde.
The dispute, which has stretched over several years, centers around competing claims to the Paramount Chieftaincy position and ongoing litigation before the High Court of Namibia. The legal battle has deepened divisions within the Ovaherero community, with rival factions supporting different claimants following a series of disputed meetings and nominations dating back to 2021.
According to the statement, both parties acknowledged that the prolonged court process has not only strained relationships within the community but has also placed a significant financial burden on those involved. Legal expenses are estimated to have exceeded N$10 million, with more costs expected should the matter continue unresolved.
As part of efforts to reduce costs and accelerate the court proceedings, both factions agreed to significantly reduce the number of witnesses to be called during trial. The negotiating teams believe this move will shorten the duration of the legal process and create a more conducive environment for reconciliation and engagement.
The statement further noted that the dispute has caused divisions among families, communities and institutions locally and abroad, leading to a loss of confidence in traditional governance structures.
In a move aimed at promoting peace and stability, both factions committed themselves to respecting the judicial process while also prioritising unity, traditions and the broader interests of the Ovaherero people.
The negotiating teams also outlined future commitments, including engaging various stakeholders and jointly participating in upcoming commemorations and activities of common interest. Both parties further reaffirmed their shared position on the Ovaherero and Nama genocide issue and pledged to continue advocating for restorative justice.
Community members were urged to remain calm, trust the leadership process and refrain from making inflammatory statements, particularly on social media.
The agreement is being viewed by many as a significant breakthrough that could pave the way for healing, reconciliation and renewed unity within the Ovaherero Traditional Authority after years of internal divisions.
