Namibia has maintained its position as the second strongest startup ecosystem in Southern Africa, according to the 2026 Global Startup Ecosystem Index released by StartupBlink.

The report ranks Namibia 94th globally and 10th in Africa, showing that the country continues to build its presence in the startup and innovation space despite strong competition from larger economies.

Namibia remains behind South Africa in the region and continues to perform alongside major African startup hubs such as Kenya, Egypt and Nigeria. One of the key highlights of the report is Namibia’s ranking among the top four countries in Africa for ecosystem attractiveness, reflecting growing interest in its startup environment.

Although the country recorded 8.2% growth in its startup ecosystem, it still dropped nine positions from last year. The report explains this as a result of faster growth in other countries rather than a decline in Namibia’s performance.

In Windhoek, startup activity grew strongly by over 20%, but the city still fell 13 places globally to rank 525th. This shows that while local development is improving, global competition is moving even faster.

Growth in the ecosystem is being supported by initiatives such as ScaleUp Namibia, led by the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board in partnership with the National Commission on Research, Science and Technology. The programme has expanded from a small group of partners into a wider support network helping startups access services and opportunities.

Regulatory institutions, including the Bank of Namibia and the Namibia Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority, are also playing a role in strengthening the environment, especially in the financial technology sector.

Stakeholders say future progress will depend on stronger cooperation between government, private sector and support organisations, with more focus needed on funding, mentorship and access to markets for local startups.
