Namibian Dollar Strengthens in 2025, Ranks Among Africa’s Top Currencies

The Namibian dollar has shown remarkable resilience in 2025, strengthening steadily against the U.S. dollar over the course of the year. At the start of 2025, one U.S. dollar exchanged for over N$18. By December, the rate had improved to approximately N$16.65, reflecting both regional economic stability and favorable currency trends.
The NAD’s performance is closely linked to the South African rand, due to the Common Monetary Area arrangement. As the rand strengthened throughout the year, the Namibian dollar followed suit, benefiting from the positive momentum in regional trade and economic stability. A softer U.S. dollar globally also contributed to the NAD’s gains, allowing the local currency to improve steadily without significant volatility.
By the end of 2025, the Namibian dollar secured its place among the top ten strongest African currencies. While North African currencies such as the Tunisian dinar and Libyan dinar remain the continent’s leaders, the NAD’s strong showing underscores Namibia’s financial stability and its alignment with the regional economy.
Here is a snapshot of Africa’s strongest currencies at the close of 2025, with the Namibian dollar included:
| Rank | Country | Currency | Approx. Units per USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tunisia | Tunisian Dinar (TND) | ~2.93 |
| 2 | Libya | Libyan Dinar (LYD) | ~5.44 |
| 3 | Morocco | Moroccan Dirham (MAD) | ~9.24 |
| 4 | Ghana | Ghanaian Cedi (GHS) | ~11.38 |
| 5 | Botswana | Botswana Pula (BWP) | ~13.29 |
| 6 | Seychelles | Seychellois Rupee (SCR) | ~13.52 |
| 7 | Eritrea | Eritrean Nakfa (ERN) | ~15.00 |
| 8 | South Africa | South African Rand (ZAR) | ~16.93 |
| 9 | Lesotho | Lesotho Loti (LSL) | ~16.95 |
| 10 | Namibia | Namibian Dollar (NAD) | ~16.65 |
The steady appreciation of the Namibian dollar throughout 2025 has had a positive impact on the economy, making imports more affordable and strengthening the purchasing power of businesses and consumers. Analysts view the NAD’s performance as a reflection of Namibia’s prudent economic policies and its strong connection to the regional currency framework.
As the country enters 2026, the Namibian dollar’s stability is expected to continue, providing a solid foundation for trade, investment, and economic confidence across the region.
