South African court has handed down a significant prison sentence to Julius Malema, a development that could have far-reaching political consequences for both him and his party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The KuGompo City Magistrate’s Court on 16 April 2026 sentenced Malema to an effective five years behind bars following his 2025 conviction on multiple charges. These include unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a public space, and reckless endangerment.

The charges relate to a controversial incident at a 2018 political rally in Mdantsane, where Malema was filmed firing shots into the air. The incident sparked widespread debate at the time over political conduct and public safety, eventually leading to legal proceedings that have now culminated in sentencing.

Prosecutors had pushed for a much harsher penalty, requesting a 15-year prison term. However, the court opted for a reduced sentence, balancing the seriousness of the offence with other considerations presented during the trial.

Malema is expected to challenge the ruling through an appeal, a move that could delay the immediate impact of the sentence. Legal analysts note that the outcome of the appeal process will be crucial, particularly regarding his future in public office, as the conviction and sentence may affect his eligibility to serve as a lawmaker.

The case has already stirred strong reactions across South Africa’s political landscape, with supporters and critics sharply divided over both the judgment and its implications for accountability among high-profile leaders.
