South Africa’s ANC Slams Premier Winde Over ‘Inappropriate’ Legislature Attire

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde found himself at the centre of controversy after attending a sitting of the provincial legislature in cycling attire, sparking debate about decorum and dress codes in government spaces.
South Africa’s legislative rules do not prescribe a strict dress code for members, but they do require adherence to the decorum of the house—guidelines.
Winde appeared in cycling shorts, shoes, and pink socks, prompting criticism from the ANC. Party spokesperson Khalid Sayed described the outfit as “inappropriate” and argued that it undermined the authority of the Premier’s office.
“While we respect the Premier’s commitment to fitness, his choice of clothing was an insult to the decorum of the legislature,” Sayed said. “It shows a lack of respect for the institution, its members, and the public it serves.”
In response, Winde’s spokesperson Regan Thaw explained that the Premier had cycled to the legislature after participating in a public health initiative.
“The Premier cycled to the opening of the world’s largest free melanoma screening operation at the Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo. His attire was practical for the ride and part of his effort to raise awareness about cycling and healthy living,” Thaw said.
Winde, known for his long-standing passion for cycling, has previously cycled to work during his tenure as MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism.
