Khomas region Census statistics Shows Women Leading in Divorce and Single Life

New data from the Khomas 2023 Census shows that the way people form and dissolve relationships in the region is shifting, with more women navigating single life and informal unions than ever before.
The Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) reported on Tuesday that women account for the majority of divorce cases in Khomas, representing about 82% of those who have legally separated, while men make up just 18%. Meanwhile, nearly 51% of women have never been married, slightly more than the 48% of men in the same category.
Consensual unions are nearly balanced, though women lead marginally, with 50.5% of females and 49.5% of males participating in such partnerships. These numbers highlight changing relationship patterns, where formal marriage is no longer the only option for adults seeking companionship or family life.
The trends align with Namibia’s broader divorce landscape, where the country holds the third-highest divorce rate on the African continent, behind South Africa and Tunisia. Locally, the High Court has handled close to 200 divorce cases this year, emphasizing the growing need for legal interventions in marital disputes.
Experts say these findings point to evolving societal attitudes, with more individuals particularly women exploring alternatives to traditional marriage. They also stress the importance of social programs and counseling services to support families and individuals navigating these changes.
Social analysts note that these trends could have long-term effects on family structures and community support networks.
