Risto Mushongo Calls on Parents to Speak Life, Not Criticism, to Children on Report Card Day

As Namibian learners receive their report cards today, Author and Life & Strategic Coach Risto Mushongo has urged parents to exercise caution in how they speak to their children about their academic performance.
In a statement shared on social media, Mushongo emphasized the profound impact words can have on young learners, warning that negative comments can leave lasting emotional scars.
“Our words carry power. They can build a child or break them,” he posted advising parents to avoid statements such as: “You are stupid,” “You will never pass,” or “You wasted my money.”
Mushongo encouraged parents to correct children with love rather than anger, offering constructive guidance that inspires growth rather than instills fear or shame. He also reminded parents to celebrate their children’s successes wisely, recommending private acknowledgments over public social media posts to avoid unintended harm.

The coach further addressed learners who may not have performed as expected, emphasizing resilience and hope.
“Next year is another opportunity to rise, grow, and bounce back stronger,” he stated.
His advice comes amid past reports of learners, particularly those in Grade 10 and Grade 12, who have tragically taken their own lives after receiving disappointing results in various regions of Namibia. Mushongo’s message underscores the importance of parental support and emotional care during these critical moments in children’s academic journeys.
