Namibian political analyst and social commentator Ndumba Kamwanyah has raised concerns, cautioning that the removal or suspension of Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo could undermine institutional stability and public confidence in the police service.

Kamwanyah noted that the Office of the Inspector General is central to discipline, command, and public trust. He warned that the removal of such a senior figure without a detailed public explanation could create perceptions of instability, potentially harming the image and reputation of the Namibian Police Force.

“The Office of the Inspector General is central to discipline, command, and public trust. When such a senior figure is removed without detailed public explanation, it can create perceptions of instability and may affect the overall image of the police force,” Kamwanyah said.

He further emphasized that accountability mechanisms within state institutions are part of democratic governance, and therefore leadership changes do not automatically indicate a loss of institutional integrity.
Kamwanyah added that, so far, there is no official evidence confirming any internal tension behind General Joseph Shikongo’s removal. However, he noted that public speculation is expected due to the timing and sensitivity surrounding the office, particularly following recent security concerns at State House.

“As an analyst, it is important to avoid drawing conclusions without verified facts. The decision may well be administrative or security-related rather than the result of political fallout,” he said.
The political analyst further explained that General Joseph Shikongo’s benefits will largely depend on the legal and administrative circumstances surrounding his suspension or removal.

According to Kamwanyah, if Shikongo has not been formally dismissed following misconduct proceedings, he could still retain certain retirement and rank-related benefits granted to senior officers and former generals under Namibia’s public service and security frameworks. However, he noted that only an official government clarification or relevant statutory provisions can conclusively determine Shikongo’s entitlement to such benefits.

Kamwanyah shared these sentiments with The Updated World reporter following reports that former Namibian Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo was officially relieved of his duties on 5 May 2026. The reasons behind his suspension remain unclear. However, sources indicate that the decision may stem from long-standing dissatisfaction within leadership structures rather than the widely reported recent security breach at State House.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has since appointed Anne-Marie Nainda as the Acting Inspector General of the Namibian Police Force.
