Residents of Kuisebmund are voicing growing concern over the deteriorating condition of their local community hall, a once-important gathering space that now stands in visible decline.

Located in Walvis Bay, the hall has long served as a venue for meetings, events, and social activities. However, its current state tells a different story. The exterior walls are stained and weathered, the paint is fading, and sections of the structure show signs of neglect. Cracks along parts of the building and aging fixtures suggest that maintenance has been minimal in recent years.

Community members say the condition of the hall reflects a broader issue of neglect in public infrastructure. “This place used to bring people together,” said one resident. “Now it looks abandoned. It’s not something we feel proud of anymore.”

The building’s location near the coast may be contributing to its rapid deterioration. Salt in the air and exposure to harsh weather conditions can accelerate wear and tear, particularly if regular upkeep is not carried out. Still, residents argue that routine maintenance could have prevented the situation from becoming this severe.

Beyond its appearance, there are concerns about safety and usability. Cracked surfaces and aging structural elements raise questions about whether the facility can still host events without risk. For many in the community, the loss of a functional public space is deeply felt.

Local residents are now calling on municipality authorities to intervene. They are urging the relevant bodies to assess the building and develop a plan to restore it to a usable condition. Some suggest that partnerships with local businesses or community groups could help fund or support renovation efforts.
For now, the hall stands as a reminder of what once was a central hub for connection and community life. Many in Kuisebmund hope that with attention and investment, it can once again serve its original purpose.

As one resident put it, “We don’t need something new. We just need this one to be cared for again.”

The Walvis bay rural council, Honourable Ruben Shikongo couldn’t comment on the matter as he was not in the office and his mobile phone was off.
