Overtaking attempt leaves two dead, several injured near Otavi

Two people were killed and several others injured in a head-on collision on the B1 road near Otavi on Friday evening after an alleged overtaking manoeuvre ended in tragedy.
The crash occurred at around 19:20, about 30 kilometres south of Otavi towards Otjiwarongo, involving a Volvo sedan and a Toyota Quantum minibus travelling in opposite directions.
Otjozondjupa Police spokesperson Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha said preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Volvo was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the oncoming Quantum approached.
According to Mbeha, both drivers allegedly swerved in the same direction in an effort to avoid a head-on collision, but the vehicles collided.
The Volvo driver died at the scene, while a passenger travelling in the Quantum also sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
The Volvo was carrying three occupants, including the driver, while the Quantum had 16 occupants on board. All those injured in the crash were taken to Otjiwarongo State Hospital for treatment.
Police have withheld the identities of the deceased until their next of kin have been informed.The bodies were transported to the Otjiwarongo Police Mortuary.
The Quantum was travelling from Otavi to Otjiwarongo, while the Volvo was travelling in the opposite direction at the time of the collision.
Police investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
