Panic Run Ends in Injury as Man Collides with Moving Vehicle During Police Patrol

An attempt to flee from a police patrol reportedly resulted in injuries after a man ran into a moving vehicle on Wednesday morning in Otjiwarongo.

The incident took place at around 11:00 on 28 January 2026 in an area known for illicit cigarette trading. Police said the man, who was dressed in a blue T-shirt, allegedly became alarmed upon spotting a Namibian Police Force patrol vehicle and attempted to escape on foot.

In the process, he collided with the side of a white Toyota Hilux GD6 bakkie that was travelling along the road. Both police and eyewitnesses confirmed that the driver of the vehicle could not avoid the collision, as the man ran into the bakkie.

Emergency medical personnel from the Ministry of Health and Social Services were dispatched to the scene and provided immediate treatment. The injured man was stabilised and remained conscious during initial medical attention. Details regarding the severity of his injuries were not made available.

Police indicated that the area has recently seen increased patrols due to ongoing operations targeting the illegal sale of illicit cigarettes. Several arrests have been recorded in recent weeks.

No charges have been filed in relation to the incident, and investigations are continuing.
