Shaningwa Calls for Strategic Leadership as SWAPO Faces Changing Political Landscape
SWAPO Secretary General Sophia Shaningwa has called on party leaders to embrace strategic thinking and adaptive leadership as the party navigates an evolving political environment marked by increased competition and complex socio-economic challenges.
Speaking during the official opening of the Rundu Urban District Leadership Training, Shaningwa said the current political landscape presents both challenges and opportunities, requiring leaders at all levels to strengthen their ability to respond effectively to changing circumstances.
She said the environment is characterised by “evolving dynamics, heightened competition and complex socio-economic realities,” adding that successfully steering the party under such conditions requires leaders who are strategic in their thinking and tactical in their approach.
Shaningwa urged party leaders to move beyond routine administration and develop the capacity to anticipate challenges, analyse situations, adapt and act decisively in defending SWAPO’s ideals and advancing its programme.
In remarks shared on her official Facebook page following the opening, Shaningwa reiterated the need for leaders to strengthen their capacity to navigate the current political environment.
She said party leaders must cultivate the ability to anticipate, analyse, adapt and act decisively, adding that these qualities are essential for effective leadership.
During her engagement in Rundu, Shaningwa also praised the town’s development progress, saying she was impressed by the changes since her previous visit.
“It is growing. It is growing very, very fast. Before I came in, I decided just to go around to see where I left it.
But I was so impressed to see that even some housing projects that were left unattended, today the structures are here,” she said.
Shaningwa commended local authority councillors, regional councillors and other leaders for working together to advance development in the town.
“You are really doing a great job. Yes, local authority councillors, the regional councillors, and the leadership all together with you are doing a great job,” she said.
She emphasised that leadership should be measured not only through administration but also through tangible improvements that positively affect communities, including infrastructure development and improved services.
The Rundu Urban District Leadership Training brought together SWAPO members and leaders to strengthen organisational capacity and equip party structures with leadership skills needed to respond to current challenges.
Shaningwa’s remarks come at a time when political parties in Namibia continue to operate in an increasingly competitive environment, placing greater emphasis on leadership, service delivery and responsiveness to citizens’ expectations.
