UK immigration authorities have launched an investigation after four Ugandan boxers failed to return with their delegation following their participation in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The athletes, identified as Angel Katushabe, Nuhu Batte, Ibrahim Khemis and Emily Nakalema, were part of Uganda’s six-member boxing team at the competition but were reportedly absent when the team prepared for its scheduled departure on Tuesday.

According to reports by NBS Sport, one of the missing boxers, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that they had planned to seek asylum in the United Kingdom, citing a desire for better training facilities and greater opportunities to advance their boxing careers.

Commonwealth Games organisers said they had worked closely with security and immigration authorities throughout the event to ensure all participants complied with entry and departure requirements.

Phil Batty said the event welcomed nearly 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and that organisers prioritised the safety and security of all participants.

The UK Home Office is expected to take appropriate action should any immigration breaches be confirmed, while authorities continue efforts to establish the whereabouts of the four athletes.
