Ondangwa Regional Prosecutor Justine Shiweda Passes Away Months After Brutal Attack

Ondangwa Regional Prosecutor Justine Shiweda has died after months of intensive medical treatment following a brutal and targeted attack that left her critically injured. Her family has confirmed her passing, bringing a tragic end to a case that shocked the nation and reignited debate about the safety of judicial officers in Namibia.
Shiweda was attacked on 17 October 2025 in Ondangwa, where she served as a senior prosecutor. According to police investigations, she was ambushed near her residence as she was preparing to travel. The attackers allegedly shot her and later poured a corrosive substance on her, causing severe physical injuries and long-term medical complications.
After the attack, Shiweda was rushed to hospital and later transferred to Windhoek for specialised care. She underwent multiple medical procedures and remained under close medical supervision for several months. Despite efforts by doctors to stabilise her condition, she eventually succumbed to complications linked to the gunshot wounds and chemical burns.
The attack drew strong condemnation from across the country, with legal professionals, political leaders, and civil society organisations describing it as deliberate, cruel, and calculated. Investigators believe the incident was not random and may have been linked to Shiweda’s official duties, particularly her involvement in sensitive criminal cases.
Police investigations led to the arrest of at least six suspects, including a medical doctor, former police officers, and other individuals believed to have played different roles in planning, facilitating, and carrying out the attack. Some of the suspects are alleged to have assisted with logistics, coordination, or execution, while others are believed to have provided professional or operational support.
The suspects were initially charged with attempted murder, conspiracy, and related offences and remain in custody. In line with Namibian law, prosecutors are expected to amend the charge to murder when the matter returns to court, following confirmation that Shiweda’s death resulted directly from the injuries she sustained during the attack.
Shiweda’s death has intensified calls for stronger security measures for prosecutors, magistrates, and other justice officials, especially those handling high-risk cases. Legal experts have warned that such attacks undermine the rule of law and pose a serious threat to the independence of the justice system.
As the case continues through the courts, many Namibians are closely watching developments, hoping that justice will be served and that accountability will follow in one of the country’s most disturbing criminal cases in recent years.
