National Fuel Prices Spike Amidst Middle East Tensions

The Ministry of Mines and Energy has announced a significant upward adjustment in fuel pump prices, effective at midnight tonight. The move comes as global oil markets face sustained volatility driven by geopolitical instability.
Minister of Mines and Energy, Modestus Amutse, confirmed that Petrol 95 will increase by N$1.40, bringing the price to N$23.48 per litre. The diesel sector will experience a more drastic surge; Diesel 50ppm is set to rise by N$4.60 to N$28.60 per litre, while Diesel 10ppm will increase by N$4.63 to N$28.36 per litre.
According to the Ministry, the price hikes are a direct consequence of rising international crude oil costs and heightened tensions in the Middle East, specifically within the Strait of Hormuz. As a net importer of refined petroleum products, Namibia remains highly susceptible to global supply chain disruptions and fluctuations in the international market.
“The fuel price adjustment in the country has been necessitated by a combination of international market developments and increasing fuel importation costs,” Minister Amutse stated. He further cited rising freight and shipping costs, higher insurance premiums, and exchange rate fluctuations between the Namibian Dollar and the US Dollar as primary drivers for the new pricing structure.
Acknowledging the potential economic strain, the Minister noted that the government has implemented a multi-million-dollar intervention to protect the public from the full extent of the market shock. Through the National Energy Fund (NEF) Fuel Price Equalisation mechanism, the government will pay approximately N$1.3 billion to suppliers to offset cumulative under-recoveries for April and May 2026.
Amutse emphasized that while the government recognizes the burden these increases place on households and key sectors like agriculture and mining, the intervention is necessary to ensure the continued security of fuel supply in the country.
The Ministry will continue to monitor global market trends to determine future price adjustments.
