A 64-year-old Rehoboth medical doctor, Dr. Michael Tune, has been remanded in custody following his appearance in the Rehoboth Magistrate’s Court on a rape charge.

The case relates to an alleged incident on 4 September 2026 in Block D, Rehoboth, involving a 40-year-old woman. It is alleged that Tune sexually assaulted the woman after she refused his request for sexual intercourse.

The State opposed bail, with prosecutor Hilma Mwata saying investigations are still ongoing. She cited the seriousness of the charge, possible interference with witnesses and investigations, and concerns regarding the administration of justice.

Tune’s lawyer, Winne Christiaan, opposed the State’s position and questioned the strength of the case. He argued that his client has strong ties to Rehoboth and is unlikely to abscond. He also referred to a petition reportedly signed by about 140 community members supporting Tune’s release.

Tune, who has practised medicine in Rehoboth for many years, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Namibia Medical Society in 2025 for his contribution to medical care and professionalism.
