Ugandan opposition leader, Bobi Wine Goes Into Hiding After Overnight Police Raid on His Home

Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has confirmed that he is in hiding following an overnight police operation at his residence in Magere, amid heightened post-election tensions.
Bobi Wine stated that security forces raided his home during the night, alleging that power was switched off, some CCTV cameras were disabled, and helicopters were seen hovering over the area. He said he was not at home at the time and has since taken measures to ensure his personal safety.
He further indicated that his wife and other family members remained at the residence after the operation. However, the Uganda Police Force has rejected claims that Bobi Wine or his wife are under house arrest. Police confirmed the presence of officers at the Magere home but dismissed reports suggesting that the family was confined or restricted from movement.
The incident comes as the Electoral Commission continues announcing presidential election results. According to provisional figures released by the Commission, incumbent President Yoweri Museveni is leading the race by a wide margin, while Bobi Wine is trailing in second place. The results are being announced amid a nationwide internet shutdown and a heavy security deployment across the country.
Bobi Wine and his National Unity Platform (NUP) have rejected the declared results, alleging widespread electoral irregularities, including ballot stuffing, intimidation of opposition candidates, and the militarisation of the electoral process. The government has repeatedly denied these allegations.
The situation has sparked intense public debate locally and internationally, with civil society organisations and observers calling for transparency, restraint by security forces, and respect for democratic rights as the electoral process concludes.
