Health Ministry Launches Probe into Ongoing Negligence Claims at Otjiwarongo Hospital

The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) has initiated a formal investigation into allegations of medical negligence linked to the recent death of Mr. Elijah Laurenzo Aresab at Otjiwarongo District Hospital.
In a media statement issued on 17 February 2026, the Ministry confirmed it had taken note of public demonstrations staged by members of the Otjiwarongo community, as well as inquiries from various media houses regarding the circumstances surrounding the case.
MoHSS extended its condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the broader Otjiwarongo community, acknowledging the grief, pain, and frustration expressed in response to the incident. The Ministry described the loss of a young life as a tragedy that deeply affects both families and communities.
According to the statement, allegations of negligence and possible procedural failures are being treated with the utmost seriousness. The Ministry indicated that a comprehensive review has already been launched to examine the clinical management of the patient and the events leading up to his passing.
While recognising the public’s call for swift answers, the Ministry stressed the importance of adhering to due process to ensure the investigation produces a fair, objective, and accurate outcome.
MoHSS further assured the public that should the inquiry uncover any evidence of negligence, deviation from established clinical protocols, or administrative shortcomings, appropriate remedial and disciplinary measures would be implemented to ensure accountability.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, stating that findings and subsequent actions will be communicated once the investigative process is concluded.
MoHSS also reiterated its mandate to provide accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services to all Namibians, adding that efforts to address challenges facing public health facilities remain ongoing.
For additional information, the Ministry advised that inquiries be directed to its Public Relations Office.
