Learners boycott dining hall over sewage concerns at Caprivi Senior Secondary School

Hostel learners at Caprivi Senior Secondary School in Zambezi Region refused to use the school dining hall this afternoon after a sewage spill affected the pathway from the hostel, raising serious health and safety concerns.
The students say the problem has persisted for more than three years, creating unhygienic conditions and potential health risks. They claim that despite repeated complaints, the issue remains unresolved.
Hostel Head Girl Teresa Kahina explained that the area was drained and disinfected in 2023, but the problem reoccurred in 2024 without any follow-up action. She added that the school principal notified the Ministry of Works in early January 2026, but there has been no progress since.
Learners also reported that health inspectors indicated disinfectant supplies were unavailable, preventing proper sanitation measures from being implemented.
The students submitted letters to education authorities and the Katima Mulilo Town Council, but they say their concerns have gone unanswered.

Hostel Head Boy Bornface Maswalo expressed particular concern about the growing number of mosquitoes near the contaminated area and warned that stagnant sewage could increase the risk of infections and other health hazards.
At the time of reporting, school authorities and relevant government offices had not issued an official response.
