Elon Musk Challenges OpenAI Direction in US Court Case

Elon Musk has appeared in a United States courtroom, accusing OpenAI of straying from the purpose on which it was founded. He told the court the organisation was originally established to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity, rather than for commercial gain.
Musk argued that OpenAI was intended to operate as a nonprofit entity, similar to a charity, with public interest as its main priority. According to his testimony, the company’s shift toward a profit-based model risks damaging trust among supporters and the wider public.
The legal dispute centres on OpenAI executives, including Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, whom Musk claims moved the organisation away from its original principles. He is seeking approximately US$150 billion in damages and wants OpenAI returned to its nonprofit structure.
OpenAI’s lawyers dismissed the accusations, saying Musk had previously backed ideas involving a more commercial model. They also argued that the lawsuit only followed disagreements over control of the company.
The case is being closely followed in the technology sector, as its outcome could influence how artificial intelligence organisations are structured and governed in the future.
