China Donates Rice to Support Namibia’s 2024/2025 Drought Relief Programme

China’s continued support to Namibia’s drought relief efforts reached another milestone as the country completed the delivery of its full food assistance commitment for the 2024/2025 period. The final shipment, amounting to 2,420 metric tons of 50kg rice bags, was officially handed over on Tuesday.
Gladice Pickering, Executive Director in the Office of the Prime Minister, accepted the consignment on behalf of Prime Minister Dr. Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare. The latest batch, valued at N$51,050,000 (USD 2,857,143), was presented by China’s Ambassador to Namibia, His Excellency Zhao Weiping.
This delivery concludes a three-part donation from China. Earlier this year, Namibia received the first 1,360 metric tons valued at N$25,517,496 (USD 1,428,571), which was successfully distributed in the Oshikoto Region. A second distribution followed across all 14 regions, with the ongoing rollout reported to be progressing well.
Prime Minister Ngurare confirmed that both the March and September 2025 consignments have reached communities as intended. “The distribution of the emergency food support has been effective, and the current phase is moving smoothly across the regions,” he stated.
Ambassador Weiping said the assistance underscores China’s unwavering partnership with Namibia in addressing humanitarian and developmental challenges. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to remain a dependable ally as Namibia advances its sixth National Development Plan.
