Security Guards in Rundu Demand Full Enforcement of Minimum Wage by 2026

Security guards in Rundu staged a peaceful demonstration on Monday, 22 December 2025, calling for the full enforcement of Namibia’s national minimum wage of N$13.50 per hour and fair treatment by their employers.

The demonstrators said the enforcement of the minimum wage is critical to improving their living conditions, noting that many guards struggle to meet basic needs despite working long hours under demanding conditions.

They accused some security companies of deliberately failing to comply with the National Labour Act, which came into effect earlier this year. The guards further alleged that certain employers maintain close ties with labour unions, a situation they claim has weakened enforcement and allowed continued violations of labour laws.

Protesters also criticised labour inspectors for what they described as a failure to effectively carry out their duties. They called for a restructuring of the labour inspection system and urged authorities to strengthen oversight to ensure full compliance within the security sector.

According to the demonstrators, only four out of the 54 security companies operating in Rundu currently pay the legally required minimum wage.

The guards demanded that the N$13.50 per hour minimum wage be fully enforced by January 2026 and urged businesses and institutions to contract only security companies that comply with national labour laws.
