Five Killed in Fatal Crash Near Okahandja

A tragic road accident claimed the lives of five people on Thursday evening after two vehicles collided head-on along the B1 road between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo. The crash happened at about 18:00, roughly 25 kilometres outside Okahandja in the direction of Otjiwarongo.
According to Otjozondjupa police community liaison officer and spokesperson, Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha, the collision involved a Volkswagen Polo travelling from Windhoek and a Ford Ranger coming from Otjiwarongo. Preliminary investigations indicate that the Polo allegedly lost control after the driver attempted to avoid guinea fowl crossing the road, causing the vehicle to move into the opposite lane.
The two vehicles collided head-on and immediately caught fire following the impact.
Police confirmed that all five occupants of the Volkswagen Polo, including the driver, died at the scene. Their identities and ages have not yet been released as authorities are still working to notify the next of kin.
The driver of the Ford Ranger, a 52-year-old man, was rescued from the burning vehicle by other motorists who stopped at the scene. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to Okahandja Medical Centre, where he is currently receiving treatment.
The Namibian Police have urged members of the public who may have relatives travelling from Windhoek to Otjiwarongo and who have not yet reached their destination to contact the Okahandja Police Station as soon as possible.
