Grandmother Speaks Out, Living in Fear Before Grandson’s Alleged Murder

The grandmother of a five-year-old boy who was allegedly murdered over the weekend has opened up about living in fear in what she describes as a violent and controlling relationship.
Maria Pienaar (45) says she had been involved with the suspect for about six months, during which she claims she endured repeated abuse. According to her, the relationship was marked by frequent assaults and intimidation, leaving her feeling trapped and unable to leave.
She alleges that the violence escalated on Saturday evening the same night her grandson, Romeo, was killed.
Recounting the events leading up to the incident, Pienaar says the suspect had asked her to accompany him to the truck port in the Prosperita area, where he intended to sell personal belongings. However, she claims his behaviour changed along the way, turning from calm to aggressive, as he allegedly began insulting her and threatening her life.
During the confrontation, the man is accused of turning his anger on the young boy. Pienaar alleges that the child was violently attacked, resulting in his death.
The grieving grandmother described Romeo as a cheerful and loving child who had been staying with her temporarily.
She further claims that the suspect had been drinking on the night of the incident and has a history of substance abuse, which she believes contributed to his violent behaviour. She also alleges that he had previously threatened her with a knife during arguments.
Pienaar says she feels some relief following the suspect’s arrest, adding that she had been living in constant fear.
The 35-year-old suspect, who was reportedly working as a domestic worker, is now facing a charge of murder.
