The Roads Authority (RA) has launched an urgent appeal for public assistance following a “shocking and unacceptable” display of reckless driving on the B1 highway.

Authorities are searching for the individual who captured video footage of an abnormal load truck dangerously overtaking another vehicle on a solid white line between Otavi and Otjiwarongo. The incident, which occurred on Friday morning, has sparked a national conversation regarding the safety standards of heavy duty transport in Namibia.

The footage gained traction after it was shared by John Louw Maton, who stated he felt compelled to highlight the increasing disregard for road rules among truck drivers.

“Abnormal load trucks should not be overtaking other trucks. This has become an increased risk on our roads and is unacceptable,” Maton remarked, adding that he shared the clip to foster greater awareness and accountability.

The Roads Authority slammed the driver’s behavior, noting that the Otavi–Otjiwarongo route is a high-traffic corridor that has already claimed far too many lives due to similar negligence.

To ensure the driver and the responsible transport company face the full weight of the law, the Namibian Police (NamPol) require the original witness to come forward.

Commissioner Swartz is leading the investigation and has requested the person who filmed the incident to contact him directly at 081 241 9276.

The push for justice is being supported by a coalition of safety organizations, including:

The MVA Fund of Namibia

The National Road Safety Council

The West Coast Safety Initiative

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the “silent war” on Namibian roads. Authorities are urging all motorists to act as “extra eyes” for law enforcement, emphasizing that reporting such incidents is not just an act of civic duty, but a move that could save lives.
