Rundu Town Council’s Firefighters Unit Reduced to ‘Decorational’ Unit With nearly Zero Equipments

Residents of Rundu are raising serious concerns about the operational state of the Rundu Town Council Fire Brigade amid reports of non-functional fire trucks, damaged equipment, and limited resources within the department.
The concerns surfaced after information circulating on social media alleged that the FireFighters Unit is struggling to respond effectively to emergencies. Following these reports, The Updated World visit to the FireFighters offices to verify the situation.
During the visit, information gathered from sources within the department indicated that fire truck are currently out of service. The vehicle reported to be non-operational due to mechanical faults that have allegedly not been repaired.
Sources further stated that the mechanical problems affecting the trucks have persisted for an extended period, limiting the department’s ability to respond adequately to fire incidents.
In addition to vehicle challenges, firefighters are reportedly working under difficult conditions. The Updated World was informed that staff members do not have proper individual uniforms or adequate protective clothing. Some uniforms currently in use are said to be shared within the department and they are for long time. It was also alleged that certain uniforms previously belonged to firefighters who are now deceased.

Equipment failures were also cited as a critical issue. Sources within the Fire Brigade reported that a major water pump intended for large fire incidents stopped functioning in 2022. This means a house can burn in their presence and they cannot do anything with the small machine. The issues was allegedly reported to the Town Council but remains unresolved.
Due to these operational constraints, sources indicated that the department may be forced to rely on assistance from the Airport’s firefighting unit.
In the interest of balanced reporting, The Updated World has sent a formal email to the Chief Executive Officer of the Rundu Town Council requesting clarification on the Fire Brigade’s operational status, vehicle maintenance, equipment repairs, and any corrective measures being taken.
No official response had been received at the time of publication.
The Updated World will continue to monitor developments and provide updates.
