Suspected Poacher Allegedly Tortured With Burning Stick Inserted Into Anus

A suspected poacher was allegedly subjected to brutal treatment, including the insertion of a burning stick into his anus, during an anti-poaching operation in the Ruacana constituency, authorities have confirmed.
Omusati regional police commander Ismael Basson said the incident occurred shortly after midnight on Monday, 20 April, at Orondjise village. The operation was carried out by a joint team comprising members of the Namibian Police, the Namibian Defence Force, and officials from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, following suspected poaching activities near Etosha National Park.
According to information provided, the man was allegedly assaulted during questioning. One of the individuals involved is accused of setting a dry stick alight and forcing it into the complainant’s anus. The suspect was also reportedly beaten with a firearm butt and punched.
The victim was taken to hospital for medical treatment and is currently being held at Oshifo Police Station in connection with the poaching investigation.
Basson confirmed that those believed to be responsible for the alleged assault have been identified, and investigations into the matter are ongoing.
The incident has also drawn attention at the national level. On Tuesday, opposition leader Imms Nashinge raised the matter with Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security Minister Lucia Ipumbu in the National Assembly. Ipumbu reportedly said she was not aware of the incident at the time.
The allegations have sparked concern over the treatment of suspects during law enforcement operations, with calls for a thorough investigation expected to intensify.
