Namibian boxer Martin Mukungu delivered one of the biggest upsets in recent local boxing history after dethroning previously unbeaten champion Flame Nangolo to become the new WBO Africa junior lightweight champion.

The highly anticipated title fight ended in dramatic fashion as Mukungu produced a devastating early knockout, handing Nangolo the first defeat of his professional career in what is being described as one of the fastest knockouts in recent Namibian boxing history.

Coming into the bout, Nangolo carried an impressive undefeated record of 14 wins from 14 professional fights and was widely considered the favourite to retain his WBO Africa super featherweight crown. Mukungu, however, entered the ring with a record of 13 wins, 2 losses, and 8 knockouts, determined to prove he belonged among Namibia’s elite fighters.

The fight had already generated massive attention before fight night, with both boxers exchanging confident statements during the build-up. Mukungu, nicknamed “The Alligator,” promised to shock the boxing world, while Nangolo remained confident that his unbeaten streak would continue.

Instead, it was the boxer from Rundu who seized the moment in spectacular style. Mukungu wasted no time after the opening bell, landing powerful combinations that overwhelmed Nangolo and forced a quick stoppage, silencing supporters who expected the champion to dominate.

The victory marks a major turning point in Mukungu’s career. After suffering two knockout defeats earlier in his professional journey, the hard-hitting fighter rebuilt himself with a series of strong performances leading into the title clash. Before facing Nangolo, Mukungu had won six consecutive fights, with most of those victories ending by knockout or technical knockout.

Speaking after the fight, Mukungu showed respect towards his opponent and encouraged Nangolo not to give up despite the painful loss.

“I respect him and his promoter. I was down also, but today I’m a champion,” said Mukungu.

He also urged Nangolo to remain focused and return stronger, saying setbacks are part of boxing and that champions are built through difficult moments.

Mukungu’s triumph is expected to open more opportunities for the Kavango-born fighter, who had previously spoken proudly about representing the region on one of the biggest stages in African boxing.

For Nangolo, the defeat brings an end to a perfect professional run, but many boxing analysts believe the talented fighter still has the potential to bounce back and remain a force in the division.
