Algeria One Result Away from Joining Africa’s World Cup Success Story

Algeria have a golden opportunity to become the eighth African nation to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 when they face Austria in a decisive Group J clash on Saturday.
With seven African nations already through to the knockout stage South Africa, Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, Cape Verde, Senegal, Egypt and Ghana—Algeria are now aiming to add their name to an impressive continental achievement.
The Desert Foxes bounced back from a 3-0 opening defeat to defending champions Argentina by defeating Jordan 2-1 in their second group match, keeping their qualification hopes alive heading into the final round of fixtures. Austria also have three points after defeating Jordan but lost 2-0 to Argentina, setting up a winner-takes-all encounter between the two sides.
A victory for Algeria would guarantee qualification as Group J runners-up behind Argentina. Austria, meanwhile, only need to avoid defeat to secure second place due to their superior goal difference. Even if Algeria draw, they could still progress as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, depending on results elsewhere.
The match has also attracted global attention because it reunites Algeria and Austria at a FIFA World Cup for the first time since their controversial meeting at the 1982 tournament, an event linked to the infamous “Disgrace of Gijón.” However, both camps have dismissed suggestions of playing for a convenient result, insisting their only objective is to win and qualify on merit.
Should Algeria progress, Africa would have eight representatives in the Round of 32 an unprecedented milestone that would underline the continent’s growing competitiveness on football’s biggest stage.
The decisive Group J encounter will be played at Kansas City Stadium, with a place in the knockout rounds at stake.
