Merino’s Late Strike Sends Spain Into World Cup Semi-Finals
Spain secured their place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals after Mikel Merino scored a dramatic late winner to seal a 2-1 victory over Belgium in Los Angeles on Friday.
The decisive moment came in the 88th minute when Merino capitalised on a goalkeeping error to keep Spain’s title hopes alive and set up a blockbuster semi-final clash against France.
Luis de la Fuente’s side had taken the lead in the 30th minute through Fabian Ruiz, who made an instant impact after being recalled to the starting lineup in place of Pedri. Belgium, however, responded before the break as Charles De Ketelaere became the first player to find the back of the net against Spain in the tournament, levelling the match in the 41st minute.
With both teams locked at 1-1 for much of the second half, the contest appeared destined for extra time. Belgium defended stubbornly, but the game changed after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was forced off through injury.
His replacement, Senne Lammens, endured a difficult introduction. In the closing stages, he failed to hold Pau Cubarsí’s powerful effort, allowing Merino to pounce on the loose ball and fire home the winning goal.
