Ghana has declined a planned State Visit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, which was scheduled for August, following concerns over the reported killing of a Ghanaian national during anti-immigrant protests in South Africa.

The decision follows the death of Bashiru Isak, 40, who Ghanaian authorities believe was killed during demonstrations reported to have taken place on 30 June 2026.

Ghana has raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding Isak’s death and is seeking clarity on the incident before proceeding with the high-level diplomatic engagement.

Authorities indicated that the State Visit would not go ahead until the matter has been addressed and satisfactory steps have been taken to resolve the concerns raised.

The development has placed renewed attention on tensions surrounding the treatment and safety of foreign nationals in South Africa, while both countries face pressure to address the issues affecting their citizens.
