Reports indicate that unrest at two high schools in Kraaifontein, near Cape Town, on Wednesday unfolded in an environment shaped by recent anti-immigration marches in parts of the area, where participants had been calling for foreign nationals to leave the country.

Against this background of rising anti-immigration sentiment, hundreds of learners became involved in school-based protests that escalated into violence and widespread disruption.

The situation reportedly began inside one of the schools when a group of learners started mobilising around demands targeting foreign nationals, calling for their removal from schools and, in some cases, from the country. What started as a school-level demonstration soon spread to a second nearby school, drawing an estimated 700 learners in total.

As the protest grew, the atmosphere became increasingly volatile and eventually went out of control. Groups of learners moved into surrounding areas, where the situation escalated further. A foreign national was allegedly assaulted during the chaos, while several vehicles were stoned and damaged.

Local informal traders were also affected, with roadside stalls looted amid the disorder. Residents and nearby businesses were left shocked as the situation unfolded in broad daylight.

Law enforcement officers were eventually deployed to restore calm, dispersing crowds and escorting learners back to their schools.

The incident highlights how recent anti-immigration demonstrations in the wider community were followed by similar sentiments being expressed within school environments, leading to disruption and violence.
