Mutare Court in Zimbabwe Grants Bail to Opposition Leader Tendai Biti After Border Arrest

Opposition politician Tendai Biti has been granted bail by a court in Mutare, Zimbabwe, after he was arrested near the Mozambique border over the weekend. He had been detained together with another activist for allegedly holding a public gathering without informing the authorities.
The two appeared before the Mutare Magistrate’s Court, which ordered their release on bail set at 500 US dollars each. As part of the conditions, both are required to report to the police every two weeks while the matter is still under investigation.
Police said the arrest took place close to the Zimbabwe–Mozambique border after officers received information about a meeting that had allegedly not been cleared with law enforcement. Under the country’s regulations, organisers of public events are required to notify authorities before holding such gatherings.
During the court hearing, the defence argued that the accused were not a flight risk and would cooperate with the investigation. The magistrate accepted the argument and ruled that they could be released on bail pending their next court appearance.
The case has drawn public attention, with many following developments closely as the legal process continues. Further court proceedings are expected in Mutare in the coming weeks.
