A senior officer of the Ghana Police Service has warned that consistently denying a spouse sex could attract criminal charges under the country’s domestic violence laws.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dennis Fiakpui, the Oti Regional Deputy Police Commander, explained that Ghana’s Domestic Violence Act (Act 732 of 2007) recognises emotional abuse, which may include the deliberate denial of sexual relations within marriage.

In remarks to the Ghana News Agency, ACP Fiakpui said a wife who persistently deny sex from her husband, without justification, may be reported and charged. If found guilty, the offence could carry a prison sentence of up to two years.

He stressed that the law is not one-sided and also protects women. Men who deny their wives sex or engage in conduct that causes emotional distress can equally face legal action.

“If your husbands refuse to eat your food and make you unhappy and cause you emotional pain, you can also report it to the police and if your husbands come home late and cause you to be unhappy, you can make a case at DOVSSU,” he said.

ACP Fiakpui encouraged both men and women who feel emotionally abused in their marriages to report such matters to the police, adding that the law is meant to promote mutual respect and emotional well-being within families.
