Uganda mourns veteran politician Moses Ali

Uganda is mourning the death of veteran politician and former Deputy Prime Minister Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, who died on Saturday at the age of 87.
President Yoweri Museveni confirmed that Ali passed away at around 16:00 at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, where he had been receiving treatment following health complications.
In a statement, Museveni described the late statesman as a dedicated public servant who made a lasting contribution to Uganda’s political and national development.

Moses Ali’s career spanned decades in both the military and politics. He joined the Uganda Army in 1968 after receiving military training in Israel and the United Kingdom and later attained the rank of four-star general in the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).
His political journey included serving in the government of former President Idi Amin before leading the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF) rebel movement. In 1986, he signed a peace agreement with Museveni’s government, marking his return to mainstream politics.
Ali went on to serve in several senior Cabinet positions, including First, Second and Third Deputy Prime Minister. He stepped down from Cabinet in May this year.
He also represented Adjumani West Constituency in Parliament for nearly three decades, having first been elected in 1996. He secured a seventh consecutive term during Uganda’s January 2026 general elections.
His death marks the end of a long political career that saw him play a significant role in Uganda’s military, peace process and government over several decades.
