Kuisebmond Residents Cry Out Over Sewage Overflows and Rising Safety Risks

Residents of Agatha Street in the Namport area of Kuisebmond, Walvis Bay, are calling for urgent intervention from local authorities as they face worsening sanitation failures and growing concerns over personal safety.
The area, located near the Namport operational zone, is reportedly struggling with repeated sewage overflows alongside overgrown vegetation that residents say is contributing to increased criminal activity.
Community members say the existing sewage infrastructure can no longer cope with the number of households now connected to the system. Frequent blockages and wastewater spillages have become a recurring problem, with raw sewage often flowing into residential streets.
Residents point to a central manhole and main sewage line along Agatha Street as a key failure point, frequently overflowing and leaving stagnant wastewater exposed for long periods. They warn that the situation poses a serious health risk, especially for children and elderly residents.
One resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the issue goes beyond routine maintenance:
“The problem is not just wear and tear. The system is simply too small for the number of households it now serves.”
Residents are urging authorities to move away from short-term fixes and instead implement long-term upgrades to the sewage network.
Proposals from the community include expanding pipe capacity, upgrading manholes, and redesigning parts of the system to better handle the current population load. Some residents have also suggested splitting the existing sewage line into multiple channels to reduce pressure and improve flow management.
Municipal authorities have reportedly been attempting emergency measures, including pumping wastewater away from public areas to reduce immediate health hazards. However, residents say these actions are temporary and do not address the underlying structural problem.
Beyond sanitation issues, residents are also alarmed by thick, overgrown reeds and vegetation along parts of the main road, which they say have created hiding spots for criminals.
The community claims the area has become increasingly unsafe, particularly at night, with reports of robberies and assaults discouraging residents from walking after dark.
Residents are now calling for urgent clearing of vegetation, improved lighting, and increased police visibility to restore safety in the area.
Attempts to obtain comment from local police were unsuccessful at the time of publication, as calls went unanswered.
Residents say they are now left in uncertainty, urging authorities to act swiftly before both the sanitation and safety conditions deteriorate further.
