The Namibia Revolutionary Transport and Manufacturing Union (NARETU) has thrown its support behind Namib Mills employees who were locked out after commencing a planned nationwide strike on Monday morning.

The industrial action has disrupted operations at all Namib Mills branches across the country, as workers down tools to demand improved wages and working conditions. Union representative Petersen Kabinda said employees are deeply frustrated and fatigued after years of what they describe as unfair remuneration practices.

Kabinda told a local news outlet that some workers have remained in the company’s service since as far back as 1989 without experiencing meaningful salary adjustments. He added that wage disparities within the company have left many employees struggling to meet basic living needs.

During the strike, workers displayed placards carrying messages such as “Hungry employees feeding the nation,” which they say reflects the irony of producing essential food products while facing financial hardship themselves.

In response, Namib Mills issued a statement confirming the lockout, arguing that the workers’ demands exceed acceptable market standards. The company stated that its actions are compliant with the Labour Act and assured the public that contingency plans are in place to maintain production and supply. Namib Mills further indicated that it remains willing to continue discussions aimed at reaching an amicable resolution.
