President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah Paid a Heartfelt Tribute to Comrade Mathias Kanana Hishoono

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah delivered a moving tribute to Comrade Mathias Kanana Hishoono, a veteran of Namibia’s liberation struggle and a lifelong servant of his country. Comrade Hishoono, who passed away on 14 January 2026, was widely recognized for his dedication to the ideals of freedom, justice, and national development.
A Pillar of the Liberation Movement
During her address, President Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted Comrade Hishoono’s pivotal role as a founding member of the SWAPO Party. She described him as a man whose commitment to Namibia’s sovereignty was guided by principle and conviction rather than personal gain. His contributions during the liberation struggle were instrumental, as he worked alongside key figures such as Dr. Sam Nujoma and Andimba Toivo yaToivo to dismantle colonial oppression and advance the cause of independence.
Service to the Nation
After Namibia achieved independence, Comrade Hishoono continued to serve the nation with distinction. He acted as a trusted Advisor to both Founding President Dr. Sam Nujoma and Second President Dr. Hifikepunye Pohamba, offering counsel on matters of governance and national policy. Beyond his national roles, he remained deeply committed to his local community, serving until his death as the headman of Onambutu Village, where he guided and inspired residents with his leadership and vision.
Champion of Ideology and Education
President Nandi-Ndaitwah also underscored Comrade Hishoono’s contribution to the intellectual and ideological foundations of the SWAPO Party. As a Lecturer at the SWAPO Party School, he dedicated his life to educating new cadres on the party’s constitution, principles, and political programs. Through his teachings, he ensured that the values of the liberation struggle continued to serve as guiding principles for Namibia’s governance and societal development.
A Legacy Etched in History
Reflecting on his enduring impact, President Nandi-Ndaitwah called on Namibians to draw inspiration from Comrade Hishoono’s life. She cited Ecclesiastes, noting that he leaves behind a “good name” that will forever be remembered as part of the nation’s history.
“Your loss is our loss, and we share in your sorrow,” President Nandi-Ndaitwah said, addressing the Hishoono family and the gathered audience.
The President concluded the ceremony by extending condolences to Meme Elina Ndeshipewa Hishoono, the widow, and the entire family, wishing Comrade Kanana eternal peace and reaffirming the nation’s gratitude for his lifelong service.
The event drew dignitaries, party officials, community leaders, and citizens, all united in honoring a figure whose life was sacrifice, dedication, and unwavering patriotism. Comrade Hishoono’s legacy is set to inspire future generations committed to building a free, just, and equitable Namibia.
