Manchester City produced a dominant second-half performance to defeat Arsenal and lift the EFL Cup, with young midfielder Nico O’Reilly scoring twice in quick succession to seal the victory for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The match remained balanced during the first half, but everything changed after the break when City returned with greater intensity and attacking pressure. Their persistence paid off just after the hour mark when Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made a costly error that handed City the opening goal.

Rayan Cherki delivered a simple cross into the box, but Kepa failed to hold onto the ball, allowing O’Reilly to react quickly and head the ball into the net from close range. Only minutes later, City struck again. Matheus Nunes sent a cross toward the far post, where O’Reilly arrived unmarked to score his second header of the match, leaving Arsenal stunned and Guardiola celebrating wildly on the touchline.

The victory marked another historic moment for Guardiola, who became the first manager to win the EFL Cup five times. It also extended Arsenal’s wait for a major trophy, with their last success still being the FA Cup triumph in 2020.

City had entered the match under pressure after recent disappointments, including elimination from the Champions League and falling behind in the Premier League title race. However, their performance in the final showed their experience and winning mentality, especially in the second half where they controlled the game with confidence and aggression.

Goalkeeper James Trafford also played an important role for City, making several crucial saves early in the match to keep Arsenal from taking the lead. His performance justified Guardiola’s decision to keep him as the cup goalkeeper, a choice that proved far more successful than Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s decision to start Kepa ahead of first-choice keeper David Raya.

Arteta’s gamble did not pay off, as the goalkeeper’s mistake changed the direction of the match and left Arsenal struggling to recover. The London side showed little attacking threat for most of the game and only tried to push forward late on, when City were already in control.

Despite the defeat, Arsenal remain strong contenders in other competitions, including the Premier League and Champions League. However, the loss in the EFL Cup final will be seen as a missed opportunity, while Manchester City once again proved that their experience in big matches makes them one of the most dangerous teams in football.
