NFA Responds to Referees’ Payment Demands Amid League Pressure

The Namibia Football Association (NFA) has responded to concerns raised by top-tier referees over outstanding match fees, assuring officials that efforts are underway to address the situation despite ongoing financial constraints.

In a letter dated 09 April 2026, Acting General Secretary Mabos Vries acknowledged receipt of the referees’ earlier communication and emphasized the important role match officials play in the country’s football ecosystem.

The NFA stated that the delays in payments were not intentional but are a result of cash flow challenges currently facing the association. Despite these difficulties, the association noted that referees continue to receive weekly support covering travel, meals, and accommodation, estimated between N$80,000 and N$100,000.

While committing to settle all outstanding match fees, the NFA indicated that payments will be made progressively as funds become available. In the meantime, referees will receive partial payments, with the remaining balances to be cleared at a later stage.

The association also appealed to referees to continue officiating matches, warning that any withdrawal of services at this stage could negatively impact the reputation of the game and disrupt the league.

This response comes after referees issued a strong warning over unpaid fees for the January to March 2026 period, even threatening to boycott matches if payments were not made before the upcoming fixtures.

With only a few matches remaining before the end of the Namibian Premier Football League season, the situation remains delicate. Around 60 referees are responsible for officiating top-tier matches, making their availability crucial to the smooth conclusion of the campaign.

The latest developments highlight growing tension between match officials and football authorities, as both sides seek a resolution before the league reaches its final stages.
