Malema Appears in Court for Pre-Sentencing Hearing on Firearms Case

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema returned to the East London Magistrate’s Court on Friday for a pre-sentencing hearing linked to his firearms-related convictions.
The appearance follows Malema’s conviction on charges arising from an incident at the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebrations held in Mdantsane in 2018, where a firearm was discharged during the event. He was found guilty of contravening provisions of the Firearms Control Act, including the unlawful possession and discharge of a firearm in a public space.
Friday’s proceedings were not expected to determine the final sentence but rather to allow the court to consider mitigating and aggravating factors. These include the nature of the offence, the circumstances under which it occurred, and Malema’s personal background. The prosecution and defence are both expected to make submissions that will guide the court ahead of sentencing.
The case has continued to attract public and political attention, with EFF supporters gathering outside the court to show solidarity with their leader. The party has repeatedly described the matter as politically motivated, while maintaining that Malema did not pose a threat to public safety.
Malema remains out on bail and has previously indicated that he is prepared to challenge any sentence imposed, should it be necessary. The matter is expected to resume once the court has concluded its assessment ahead of formal sentencing.
